Partnership with GSSM

Startsville is an initiative of the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics Foundation that expands upon the success of the school by serving as an entrepreneurial hub for students, alumni, and the community.

Launching Hartsville’s Entrepreneurs

At Startsville, we help turn ideas into reality. We are a center of innovative thinking and innovative action. What does that mean? We connect people to people: the mentors, experts, and institutions needed to build a business, to change a community. We connect people to resources: the technical, scientific, and financial knowledge needed to build a business and make it succeed.

Building South Carolina’s Entrepreneurial Environment

We support economic development efforts in Hartsville, S.C, the Pee Dee, and the state as the founders of SC’s first Rural Innovation Network a private-public partnership of universities, city governments, community foundations, and business incubators seeking to share knowledge, resources, and practices across the geographic areas of rural South Carolina to address the challenges we all share.

Our Start

In 2013 we were founded by the Community Foundation for a Better Hartsville (CFBH) and quickly became its largest project.   The CFBH is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to supporting economic development in Hartsville. Through their support, three years of financial support from the Duke Energy Foundation, the Byerly Foundation and the vision of Mayor Mel Pennington and the City of Hartsville, our Center was born.

We were founded as part of Clemson University’s Technology Village pilot program. This program was an attempt to ask what role centers of innovation and entrepreneurship play in the economic development of rural areas. As part of the Technology Villages program, the Regional Entrepreneurial Development Center at Clemson University provided startup support services to drive technology business development. The Technology Villages program is a statewide network of technology business incubators located in Bluffton, Rock Hill, Conway, and Pickens.

In 2014, we received funding from the South Carolina Department of Commerce’s Innovation Office. This funding and the subsequent support in 2015 allowed our Center to strengthen the economic vitality of Hartsville and the Pee Dee region. We became part of South Carolina Department of Commerce’s Innovation Nation.

This support led us to envision our value to the community. We build our entrepreneurial community. We support innovation in our region. We launch entrepreneurs.
